Thinking in OODA Loops

"Disoriented decision makers are doomed."

Rao reframes John Boyd’s OODA loop as a mental discipline rather than a sequential process. Observe, Orient, Decide, Act are not steps to walk through; they are dimensions to hold in awareness simultaneously. The phase that determines whether the loop runs at all is Orient.

Rao spends most of his attention there. Orientation is where mental models, prior experience, cultural traditions, and current signal combine into a working frame. Get it wrong and every decision that follows is wrong. Get it right and the rest falls into place.

This is SoftMachine’s terrain. Observe was the work of the last era — the internet made content infinite and signal cheap. AI is making observation even more abundant. Orient is the work of the next.

The salons are observation infrastructure: pre-consensus signal captured at the source, attributed to the people who carry it. The conversation turns that signal into orientation infrastructure — a working frame people can explore when they need to think clearly under pressure.

We are the layer underneath the decision.
