Braiding Sweetgrass
"All flourishing is mutual."
Robin Wall Kimmerer is a Potawatomi botanist. She braids three strands at once: the empirical observations of Western plant science, the relational worldview of Indigenous ecological knowledge, and the personal voice of someone who has lived inside both.
For SoftMachine, the relevance is the gift economy. Knowledge is not data to be extracted from a population; it is a gift held in relationship, returned to its source, and reciprocated through care. The salons and the contributor cooperative are an attempt to operate inside that frame, not the extractive one.
The sweetgrass is braided with three strands, each visible. None disappears into the other.
